We offer for sale this 1948 Greyhound PD-4151 Silversides, a historic American intercity coach that represents an important period in long-distance bus travel. This vehicle is powered by a 6.8-liter six-cylinder diesel engine paired with a manual transmission. The bus offers seating for 37 passengers and has been equipped with a 500-watt Radio-CD-MP3 system and a roof hatch. The exterior aluminium body panels show several small dents and scratches, which is typical considering the age of the vehicle. A small panel on the right side is missing and has been refinished in aluminium colour so it blends with the surrounding bodywork. The door has damage to the aluminium panel and there are various small imperfections visible across the body. The interior shows signs of use with stains on several seats, some leather in the luggage racks loosening and several cracks in the ceiling. The floor and tables remain in good condition. The door hinge in the centre has been reinforced with a profile piece and ideally would be replaced.
The Greyhound “Silversides” coaches are among the most recognizable buses ever built in the United States. Introduced in the 1940s and produced by General Motors for Greyhound Lines, these buses were designed with input from the renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy. Their nickname “Silversides” came from the distinctive aluminium side panels that gave the buses a futuristic appearance for their time. During the 1940s these coaches were considered among the most advanced and luxurious buses in the world, offering features such as air conditioning, reading lights and reclining seats. Greyhound operated one of the largest diesel bus fleets globally and these coaches played a major role in connecting cities across the United States, including routes through the Rocky Mountains. Today surviving examples are rare and valued for their historical significance, distinctive design and connection to the golden era of long-distance coach travel.
